Do know that it is really easy to start a blog/website nowadays. Starting one that is successful or makes you money is a different story altogether. Not to worry, let’s get the easy part done first!
How To Start A Blog Outline
There really only 3 things you need to get your blog up and running;
1. Domain Name – This is the web address of your blog. For example this blog’s domain name is www.ImperfectStart.com.
2. Web Hosting – This is where your blog is housed online so that it will be available to your visitors 24/7.
3. WordPress.Org – There are lots of free software that can help you design and run your blog. WordPress is a very popular option as it offers a lot of customization options. You have over 100,000 different themes design and thousands of free plug-ins to choose from. This blog is runs on WordPress.
You can get these 3 things in less than 10 minutes. It is really not a complicated affair but before you rush off to get started, they are a few things you ought to know first.
The first thing you need to do is to register for a domain name. Do not rush into this as it is an important component to your website. A bad domain name can easily cost you several thousand visitors a month so do take some time to research your choice of domain name.
Domain names that describe what your blog is about can be a good way to start. Maybe you would like to start a niche blog so having keywords that are related to your niche in your domain name is also recommended.
Common SEO discussions on search engine ranking would recommend that you choose a domain name that is keyword rich in the area you want to be rank in. However, it can be difficult to get that ideal keyword rich domain name if your niche is very competitive.
I typically choose something that can be branded and is memorable because ANY sites content can and will get ranked.
Try to keep your domain name simple and easy to remember. If you happen to tell someone on the street about your blog, they must be able to remember the domain name. For the same reason, do not have hyphens or punctuation marks in your domain name as it just complicates matter.
Also, do get a .Com or .Net ending domain as these are more common and people remember them better. Less popular endings like .biz or .tv may allow you to use the domain name you want, but people may forget offhand and they end up going to a .Com website instead.
To register for a domain name, you can go to popular domain registrars like GoDaddy but there are other domain registrars you can go to. I recommend NameCheap as they don’t have all the unnecessary upsells that companies like GoDaddy have.
To get your blog online, you need to” rent” a space on the server of a web hosting company for all your website files, allowing your website to be stored so that it will be available 24/7 for your visitors.
They are plenty of web hosting providers to choose from and they are pretty much the same in terms of price points and features. Just make sure that the webhosting provider allows point and click installation of the WordPress software. There should not be any extra charge for this.
I do recommend Bluehost as they host most of my websites/blog, their customer support is excellent and can be contacted 24/7 via live chat.
Note: Bluehost provides one free domain registration with their hosting package which safes you the hassle of going to a domain registrar separately to register your domain.
It was not so long ago that you needed to be all technical to setup a website. And if you not a techie, you have be prepared to folk out thousands of dollar for a website.
Today, all you have to do is log into your web hosting provider account, go to the control panel or cPanel, use point and click installation software like Fantastico, SimpleScripts or WordPress Express to install WordPress. With one click and under a minute, your website is online and you can start adding content to it.
With WordPress, you can run and design your website easily. It is highly customizable with tons of designer themes and plugins to choose from. They are many WordPress themes and plugins, both free and paid ones, which you can find on the internet.
In case you are wondering what themes and plugins are, themes are the designs and layout of your WordPress website while plugins provide added functionality to your WordPress website. They are really easy to work on. You can just download them, go to your WordPress admin panel, go to Themes or Plugin, upload the Zip file and Activate! That’s it.
