I often experiment with different, cutting edge or just plain weird online business ideas and marketing strategies just to see if it could fly. I figured mistakes I made can help so I write case studies like the one you see below and hope that you can read it and take something away that might help you in your online business. You can also help me improve upon my ideas so please do leave me your thoughts by commenting.:)
Monetizing Facebook Group Marketing in the Make Money Online Niche
In this case study, I outline my attempt to try and monetize my Facebook group marketing efforts in the “Make Money Online Niche”.
This is really difficult. The audience in the “Make Money Online Niche” really loves spamming for free Facebook traffic. If you have being in any of such Facebook groups, you will know what I mean. Every minute you can have more than 5 marketers posting in that same group. Such groups can have a lot of members but it is questionable how many members will actually see your post in their news feed due to the sheer amount of post generated every minute by marketers.
Moreover, the audience in the make money online niche tends to be more interested in pushing their opportunity. It is akin to a situation where everyone is shouting and no one really listening which makes marketing in this Facebook group niche so difficult.
It Is A Free But Boring Process!
Typically, a marketer will join tons of such group. Once they are in, the spamming begins. Their daily ritual will be like posting their affiliate links or opportunity manually to every group they are in. Once that is done, rinse and repeat. The whole process is like a numbers game where you hope the more you post, the more people will see your post and click on your link. If you do it too fast, you risk having your Facebook ban your account for spamming.
There is definitely a demand for automation here (and only if I can give it away for free). They are already many solutions to automate this process. However, there are not exactly free and not as automated as I like it to be.
I wanted a solution that:
1. Once set up, I don’t have to fuss over it anytime soon. There are apps that work but require running it from your computer all the time which I am not very keen of.
2. It can be given away for free.
3. The solution I am giving away for free must really work. There are enough people pushing seemingly free offers which bait users to upgrade by paying.
I decided that the Social Group Infiltrator WordPress Plugin meets my requirements. There were other solutions that could post to 500 groups per hour while Social Group Infiltrator could only post to 12 groups per hour. Which I think is safer and not so likely to get the user’s Facebook account ban for spamming.
Monetizing Through List Building
I figured I could try building an email list (and maybe monetise later) in the “make money online niche’ by giving away the Social Group Infiltrator WordPress Plugin for free.
My Set up Cost:
– Took me about 2 days to set this up.
– Resale right for Social Group Infiltrator WordPress Plugin ($47)
– My squeeze page ($0)
– Landing page for download instructions ($0)
– Hosting for Squeeze page & landing pages ($0)
– WordPress sites to install the Social Group Infiltrator WordPress Plugin ($0)
– GetResponse Email Marketing ($0)
– Share and host the plugin on box.com ($0)
The advantages I have in this setup is that I am already using GetResponse for my Email Marketing (cost me nothing to add another campaign), and I already have an existing yearly WordPress hosting service which allows me to run unlimited WordPress sites. These are services that I am already using to run my existing online businesses and do not incur any additional cost to me.
When the Rubber Meets the Road…
And this is the simple squeeze page I set up for this Facebook group post.
I got about like about 3 opt-ins on day 1
On average I get about 3 opt-ins daily from this setup. These are double opt-ins meaning they have to go thru an added step of confirming their opt-ins via a link GetResponse sent them. I figured if I wanted to somehow monetize from this email list, I needed to filter out freebie seekers and somehow improve the responsiveness of this list.
At the time of writing this, this setup has already been running for 4 months. I got over 400 subscribers from this campaign. The Social Group Infiltrator Plugin has been downloaded over 348 times.
Initially, I thought it would be appropriate to promote a basic Facebook marketing course (Social Lever) that cost $2.95 using banner ads on my landing pages and email marketing to the list. I think I only got 3 sales from this which is about $15 in commission (I know, it is embarrassing).
I then relies that the audience I was marketing to don’t really know what WordPress is or don’t have access to a fully-hosted WordPress site (although they really like the idea of making money online). You need a fully-hosted WordPress site to install WordPress plugins. I figured I could give away 2 free WordPress sites via Wealthy Affiliate Free starter account which works out to be much better in terms of conversion to sales.
I set this marketing system 4 months back, and did not have to fiddle with it again.
Even though it is free marketing, I feel kind of stuck in terms of scaling this set up for more traffic and better conversion to sales. For this campaign, I am relying entirely on Facebook for traffic and is limited by what Facebook allows. Ultimately, Facebook can at anytime pull the rug on what I am doing here.
